c21 Theatre Company Presents ‘May the Road Rise Up’

A hilarious production of a young woman’s positivity against adversity

ONE of Northern Ireland’s leading theatre companies, c21, takes its latest production, ‘May the Road Rise Up’ to the Lyric stage. A fast paced, black comedy, it focuses on a young woman’s boundless positivity in the face of extreme adversity and touches on realistic problems. The play follows Belfast native Mia, along her hilarious yet bumpy road called life.

Kick starting a Northern Ireland wide tour, ‘May the Road Rise Up’ will run at the Lyric Theatre Belfast from Tuesday 20th to Saturday 24th February, followed by a seven-show tour across the province.

May the Road Rise Up is the fourth collaboration between the Lyric’s resident writer, Rosemary Jenkinson and c21 Theatre Company; this fantastic one-woman show is directed by co-founder, Stephen Kelly, produced by Tom Finlay and stars Christine Clare as the lively and boisterous Mia.

Following some questionable life decisions, along with a particular unruly influence in her life, Mia’s continual positive nature adds to the play’s charm, offering a sense of comic relief whilst highlighting the current and real-life problems associated with her journey which results in living on the streets in Belfast.

Ahead of the tour, Director and Co-founder of c21 Theatre Company, Stephen Kelly said, “Once again I am very privileged to be working with Rosemary and Tom on this production. Rosemary has tapped into the myriad of issues facing many in today’s society. May the Road Rise up is a traditional Irish blessing but if translated literally also means ‘may you succeed on the road,’ and that’s something our main character is trying to do.

“We are delighted to have on board Christine Clare, who brings to life the character of Mia exactly how we imagined it. A one-woman show can be difficult for any actor; however, Clare’s talent fills the stage and I have no doubt that the audience will be captivated by her performance as she tries to succeed in life and on the road.”

Writer, Rosemary Jenkinson, continues, “I am delighted to be showcasing ‘May the Road Rise Up’ at the Lyric. Although the play touches on the harsh realities of life as well as the curve balls it can throw at you, the main component to take away is Mia’s heroic positivity during her struggle. We want the audience to sympathise and laugh along with her as well as root for her to succeed.”

Following the success of previous comedies brought to you by c21 Theatre Company such as ‘Love or Money’ and ‘Ardnaglass on Air, ‘May the Road Rise Up’ is set to become another hit.

The production is supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland through National Lottery Funding. Gilly Campbell, Arts Development Officer for Drama and Dance, Arts Council of Northern Ireland said; “The Arts Council is pleased to support this new production from c21 Theatre Company which highlights the power of the arts in dealing with challenging subjects. I am also delighted to see the play tour regionally, helping to bring great art to everyone. Go see!”

‘May the Road Rise Up’ is also proudly sponsored by Belfast City Council and Doyle Shipping Group. Performances take place 20th – 24th February 2018, Lyric Theatre, Belfast followed by seven shows in venues throughout Northern Ireland.
