BBC Music Day begins with Belfast Community Gospel Choir

Getting BBC Music Day 2018 in Northern Ireland underway this morning, Belfast Community Gospel Choir serenaded commuters at Belfast’s new Lanyon Place Station. The performance kicks off a day of musical activity on BBC Radio Ulster, focusing on the themes of transport, choirs, Freshers’ Week and women in music.

Later this morning, renowned conductor Dominic Ellis-Peckham will be putting the BBC Northern Ireland Choir through their paces for a live performance of the John Denver classic, Take Me Home Country Roads on the Hugo Duncan Show, from 1.30pm.

In keeping with the theme of transport, The Gerry Kelly Show from 3pm will broadcast live from the main railway gallery at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum at Cultra, with special guests and performances from The Loughshore Choir, Bernadette Morris and the Over the Hill Collective.

With Freshers’ Week underway at Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University, Michael Bradley will present the Arts Show live from Ulster University’s Foyle Arts Building on the Magee campus at 6.30pm.

As well as a round-up of the very best in local music, theatre and cultural happenings, guests will include the Ulster University Chamber Choir, ahead of their November performance in New York’s Carnegie Hall.

On Blas Ceoil at 7pm, Lynette Fay will host a Women in Music special with

Gráinne Holland, Claire Kieran and Úna Monaghan in conversation about their roles in the music world. Lynette will also feature session tracks recorded with female artists.

At 10pm, Jazz World with Linley Hamilton will highlight Irish female vocalists who have continued to make an impact through their talent and performance.

Included in Linley’s Music Day playlist will be: Dana Masters, Siobhan Pettit, Katharine Timoney, Emilie Conway and Suzanne Savage.
