Interview: Conleth Kane releases debut album
Local singer Conleth Kane releases his debut album this weekend and we caught up with him to chat about Proud and what inspired the album.
Why did you decide to do a live album?
I think my music style lends itself best to a live sound rather than a studio sound, so it felt right. I sing better for an audience, but I was extremely nervous before going onstage to record it live. When I heard the songs back I critiqued moments because they were not perfect, but after a few listens I began to love the imperfections and I really embraced the fact it was recorded live and now I’ve grown to love it. It truly captured the moment. I have always dreamt of being a singer, writing an album and performing in the West End, so in a way I have really conquered a dream and I will always be able to listen to it back on this album. I’m proud of it.
What inspires you to write and is there a favourite on the album?
There are only 8 songs on the album, a few didn’t make the album for artistic reasons. Also, I didn’t want to give everything away in one go. The album flows nicely and I would definitely say it has been written from an LGBT perspective. I wrote ‘Proud’ so I could express my feelings through music as a member of the LGBT community, but the song itself is for absolutely everyone. ‘The Grass Is Greener’ and ‘What I Wouldn’t Give’ are songs of loss and grief and are extremely beautiful ballads. Anyone can identify to these who has been through the loss of a loved one. ‘Yellow Brick Road’, ‘I Wonder’, ‘Love Potion’ and ‘Jiggy With It’ are uptempo guitar-led tracks that always go down live! I do adore ‘City Of The Lost Boys’ because it’s such a gorgeous song that really describes my life, I love listening to it and I love singing it even more.
What about ‘The X Factor’ or ‘The Voice’? Ever considered that route?
I came 4th on RTE One’s Fame The Musical back in 2010 so I have been through that Reality TV Show experience. In terms of pop music TV Shows….in both 2017 and 2018 I was brought in to audition for both ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ and ‘The X Factor’ by producers/talent scouts within SYCO Entertainment, and both times I got standing ovations from both audiences and panels, and both times my auditions ended up in the bin for whatever reasons. I am not ruling this route out in the future, or other shows like this because they really have worked for other people and some wonderful artists have emerged from this kind of platform. Would I like to have have James Arthur or Little Mix’s success? Yes, of course I would, but I am not sure I am going to have to go down their particular route to achieve it – for now anyways. Never say never.
You started out as an actor in theatre and TV. Was the transition to being an artist an easy one? Will we ever see you return to the stage to be an actor again?
These vegetables contain indole-3-carbinol, a compound helpful http://cute-n-tiny.com/tag/cat/page/8/ generic viagra in boosting sex drive.
Not in the near future, no. I have really evolved as a person and many aspects of my life have changed, including my desire to be an actor. I’m not saying I will always feel this way, as many people tend to come full circle in life, and often return to their roots. I suspect this will happen at some stage in my life, but for now I am happy and content, and I definitely feel more in control, and it’s so much more rewarding when you create something such as music and it receives a positive reception.
Would you consider coming back and doing a homecoming gig?
Definitely. I am in talks about doing a big gig in my hometown of Lurgan this coming summer. Nothing is confirmed but I have been approached. It would be lovely to play the Black Box again as I have played two solo gigs there and I had a great time both times. I might do something around Pride week. Watch this space.
Conleth Kane ‘Proud – Live in London’ is out 24th February 2019 on all major digital platforms.
